What Is Energy Efficiency Day 2024?

What is Energy Efficiency Day?

Energy Efficiency Day takes place annually on the first Wednesday of October. With the world making significant strides towards a renewable future, this day serves as an important reminder to educate people on the benefits of maximising energy efficiency through green solutions. Not only does this help protect the planet and move nations closer to achieving net zero, but it also significantly reduces energy bills for both homes and businesses. Energy Efficiency Day aims to inspire homeowners and businesses to adopt energy-saving practices that benefit both the environment and their finances.
What Do Maisum Do?
Previously known as Reuse Electrical, Maisum was established two years ago with a mission to help clients begin their renewable energy journey. With so much misinformation circulating, we wanted to ensure people receive the best solutions tailored to their needs. When introducing renewable energy, it’s crucial to choose the right solution that will reduce your energy bills as much as possible. Unfortunately, many businesses are capitalising on the renewable energy trend, leading clients to invest in the wrong options. We set ourselves apart by offering a range of solutions, including Solar PV & Battery Storage, EV Charging, and Heating Solutions, all designed to meet your specific needs.
"There's lots of miscommunication out there, well, we're setting the trades apart. We're here to give clean, honest advice on whether a solution is viable for you."

Growth of Renewable Energy

While renewable energy has grown in popularity in recent years, its roots actually trace back to 1927, when the first commercial wind turbine was sold to U.S. farmers. The sector gained further momentum in the 1970s, driven by the oil crises, which heightened the focus on energy independence and spurred the development of renewable energy sources. In 1991, a landmark achievement occurred with the construction of the first ten onshore wind farms, supplying energy to 2,700 homes.
Similarly, the 1970s also saw a surge in solar panel installations, again influenced by the oil crisis. Further progress came in 1990 with the introduction of the Non-Fossil Fuel Obligation, a policy requiring electricity suppliers to purchase a portion of their energy from renewable sources such as solar panels. This policy marked a significant step in advancing the adoption of renewable energy in the UK.

What Can You Install On Your Home Or Business?

Homes and businesses in the UK have a variety of options to improve energy efficiency, helping to reduce bills and protect the environment. These options include upgrading insulation, installing energy-efficient windows, switching to LED lighting, and investing in smart thermostats. Renewable energy solutions, such as solar panels or heat pumps, are also increasingly popular, allowing for a more sustainable energy supply and further reducing reliance on the grid. Additionally, improving energy efficiency can lead to long-term savings and lower carbon footprints, contributing to a greener future.
What Do Maisum Offer?

Solar PV & Batteries

Installing solar panels offers some of the best financial and environmental benefits for your home or business. While there are myths about the costs and ROI of solar panels, many grants and various other incentives are available to reduce the initial cost, leading to a faster ROI. On average, you could see your bills reduced by 50-70%, and this could be even higher with solar storage.

Heating Solutions

Ensuring your heating system is energy efficient is one of the most cost-effective upgrades you can make to your building. There is a range of heating solutions available, including underfloor heating, boilers, radiators, and central heating systems. Many of these options now come with advanced control settings, allowing users to reduce energy consumption and lower their costs

Electrical Services

When helping clients with installing solutions such as solar panels, EV chargers or general electrical jobs, it's common we find that there is many smaller fixes they could do to reduce their bills. Replacing traditional incandescent bulbs with LED lighting, installing smart meters and thermostats and various other options can help reducing your overall bills.

Costs Of Becoming Energy Efficient

The cost of installing renewable energy solutions can vary significantly, depending on the type of solution, the size of the property, the location, and other factors. Starting with solar panels, according to GreenMatch, the average cost for a 4kW solar panel system on a residential property is around £5,000 to £6,000. This doesn’t include battery storage, which, while increasing the overall cost, reduces your reliance on the grid. A battery allows you to store excess energy for use at night or during power cuts and even enables you to sell excess energy back to the grid.
Over the past 10-15 years, solar panel costs have dropped significantly. Additionally, various government grants and initiatives, such as green mortgages, can help offset installation expenses.

For businesses, the average cost of solar panels increases, ranging from £16,000 to £60,000. This wide range is due to the large differences in building sizes and other factors. This price range typically applies to systems sized between 20kW and 50kW, suitable for small to medium-sized commercial properties.
While there is an average cost for installing solar panels, the cost of electrical and heating solutions can vary significantly. Energy-efficient electrical solutions depend on the specific requirements, the size of the building, and any additional work needed to maximise bill reduction. Heating solutions also vary widely. For instance, air source heat pumps can cost between £2,400 and £14,050 to install, while ground source heat pumps can be up to three times more expensive. According to CheckATrade, infrared heating costs around £75 per square metre. Although these heating solutions come with different upfront costs, all offer excellent returns on investment (ROI) and contribute significantly to making the world more sustainable.
